Shiatsu Massage

What can you expect from a Shiatsu Massage?

Depending on your constitution and general energy levels, Shiatsu uses a variety of techniques to improve energy flow throughout your body and promote deep relaxation.
These include gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet, and when appropriate, more dynamic rotations and stretches.
Other Shiatsu techniques can include rocking, rubbing, kneading, and tapping. Depending on the goal of the session, the effect may be stimulating or calming.
The actual techniques we use are much the same for each person, but the manner in which we apply them is different. If you are chronically ill or weak, we will apply less physical pressure and the style of treatment will be softer. During the Shiatsu session, we may also concentrate on specific or troubled areas, such as tightness in the neck and shoulders, weakness in the lower back, and/or abdominal tension.

What Does Shiatsu Feel Like?

When performing shiatsu, therapists apply deep pressure using their fingers, thumbs, and/or palms in a continuous sequence. The finger pads are used to apply pressure, and each point is typically held for two to eight seconds.  In some cases, pressure points stimulated during shiatsu may feel tender but it should not hurt. People often describe this tenderness as good pain. Shiatsu is typically done on a low massage table or on a mat on the floor. Although the sequence is often similar to other types of massage, no massage oil is used, so it is usually done with the client fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothing.
